X International Congress of Hydraulic Engineering and VI International Seminar on the Integral Use of the Water

The Congress will be carried out in the Northeastern region
of the Cuban archipelago, specifically in Holguín province,
fourth place in territorial extension with 9300.6 km², and third
for its population size with 1 032 814 inhabitants. The most
outstanding natural region are: karstic mountainous group of
Maniabón, the Nipe basin, the mountainous group of Nipe-
Cristal, where is located the highest elevation with 1 231 m
a.s.l. and the first National Park in Cuba founded in 1930, the
last region comprise the mountainous group of Sagua-
Baracoa, considered as that of higher biodiversity richness of
the Caribbean basin. The hydrographical net is well developed,
represented by important rivers: Sagua, Mayari, and
Moa. At the moment the most important hydraulic work in
the country is being carried out in this Province. The most
important nickel and cobalt concentrations, whose production
constitutes 20% of the revenues of the country, are located
in this region. The northern coastline of Holguin Province
is recognized by the beauty of their coralline sandy
beaches, constituting the third tourist pole of the country. It is
also an important cultural and historical patrimony, it was the
scenario where the discoverer of America, Cristopher Colombus,
in the year 1492, exclaimed: "This is the most beautiful
earth that human eyes have seen"
