EU: Water Quality Is Poor Despite Rules

Thu, 22/03/2007

Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas of the European Union said that the water quality in Europe's rivers, coastal waters, lakes, and aquifers remained poor despite rules requiring cleanups and punishments for those who pollute water sources. Any EU nation that fails to meet clean water standards by 2015 will be hauled into court. Warning that only 43% of groundwater and 28% of surface water is likely to meet quality targets by then, Dimas urged member states to work harder and faster.
