Campaign to fine water wasters

Fri, 23/03/2007

Minister of Agriculture Photis Photiou of Cyprus announced that because reservoir levels on the island were at only 26% of capacity, anyone caught wasting water would be subject to a stiff fine. According to Phedros Roussis of the Department of Water Development, dams currently hold 72 million cubic meters of water compared to 135 million at this time last year. The Cabinet voted to increase production of desalinated seawater from two plants in Larnaca. Nevertheless, the government was criticized by the Green Party for allowing new golf courses, which waste millions of tonnes of water each year, to be built.
