Time for Europe to tackle looming water crisis: environment agency
Wed, 14/02/2007
The European Environment Agency warned that unless European countries begin planning how to cope with climate change now, they'll pay an economic and social price later. Alterations in rainfall and snowfall patterns, along with rising temperatures, are already starting to affect water supplies. By the end of the century, southern Spain and Italy, Greece, and Turkey are expected to suffer from a 5% decline in summer rainfall and more frequent droughts. Flooding will become more frequent all over Europe. Other forecasts include the drying up of wetlands in the Netherlands as groundwater decreases and the shrinking of streams and lakes in Austria as meltwater from glaciers dwindles. Lower river levels in general will restrict navigation and the generation of hydropower.
