A Manual for Monitoring the Mass Balance of Mountain Glaciers

[A Manual for Monitoring the Mass Balance of Mountain Glaciers]

This manual is an initial outline of monitoring processes of the glaciers of the Hindu Kush-Himalaya (HKH) region. This draft manual provides the theoretical background of glacier mass balance and an outline of definitions and common data formats. An ‘ideal’ glacier for mass balance measurements is presented as a guide. The design of a Glacier Monitoring Network (GMN) based on weather patterns and climate change considerations is proposed. The second part of the manual provides practical details regarding fieldwork, data analysis, and data presentation. The focus is on the peculiarities of low altitude glaciers in general and the HKH region in particular.
