The Palace of the Lions, Alhambra and the Role of Water in its Conception

[The Palace of the Lions, Alhambra and the Role of Water in its Conception]

Water gave life to the Alhambra in Spain. From the River Darro, at the foot of the Sabikha Hill, water was brought to the site by means of a complicated canalization system with aqueducts to the Generalife and the Alhambra. The Palace of the Lions has always been praised for the balanced composition of architecture, vegetation and water. The centre of the water arrangement, like that of the Palace itself, is the fountain of the Lions. The water spurts out from fountains or gushes from the sides of small sunken bowls, located either inside the two halls on the north-south axis, or under the portico’s projecting pavilions on the perpendicular axis.
