This will also take into account environmental aspects such as climate change, pollution and protected areas. The development of a multimodal Trans-European Network by 2030 is a sustainable investment to guarantee the exchange between consumption and production area with an increase role of inland waterways, inland and maritime harbours. Projects like Seine-Scheldt, Danube development, Po upgrading, Rhine-Mediterranean Link will interconnect the existing 20,000 km of large gauge waterways, representing 50% of the inland waterways network in Europe. Modernizing and greening the fleet will target low cost and low energy mobility issues. Modern and integrated management of inland waterways will reconcile sustainable use of this natural resource.
