Programa: INTAS
The aim of this project is to develop a wide range of desalination electrodialysis plants of different productivity and to organise their serial production at the Almaty Electromechanical Plant in Kazakhstan for the needs of the population of the Aral region.
The use of desalination water is an actual task for Kazakhstan, because the Republic possesses practically inexhaustible resources of the mineralized waters with the salt content of 1-6 g/l. In the Southern regions, there are more than 2,000 populated points experiencing shortage in drinking water with the consumption volume of 20-500 m3/day. One of the progressive desalination methods for this range of salt content is electrodialysis as a result of its technical simplicity, small power consumption and ecological purity.
A technological scheme of the plants and a principal scheme of sources of constant current feed will be developed in order to produce experimental samples of electrodialysers and to conduct industrial scale tests.
The process of electrodialysis desalination of waters of the Aral region will be studied and the main parameters will be given. To attain the optimum characteristics of the process of water treatment by electrodialysis, the following parameters will be regulated: stack dimensions and number of cells, circulation system and spacers optimization, current density and tension on an electrodialyzer which condition the polarization characteristics of the process. Electrochemical and physico-mechanical characteristics of membranes will be studied to avoid the poisoning by the substances which are contained in natural waters.
A comparison with other international plans will be conducted to define the best state-of-the-art available to date, and membrane specifications and prices will be examined in order to select the best supplier.
The expected result is the development of a production of an electrodialysis system for water purification well adapted to the local needs and technical and human capabilities. Two packages of documentation will be produced, the first regarding the construction and the second the use and maintenance of the electrodialysis plants. Scientific papers, symposium presentations and patents will be made on this original large-scale experiment and the improving in the performances of electrodialysis plants, for example in the hydrodynamics and membrane fields.
