The original aim of the project was to develop, for a shearer, an on-board compact high pressure water pump to supply a venturi device for controlling dust and methane concentrations around the drum whilst cutting. This project was dropped in 1985 since such equipment was by then available commercially. It was then decided to use the remaining funds to develop a new type of shearer on which coal cutting was assisted by high-pressure water jets. This system was designated JACC (Jet Assisted Coal Cutting).
