The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM)

Mar, 21/02/2006 / Mar, 21/02/2006

The new European bathing water directive has been the subject of much discussion since the European Commission published its initial proposal in 2002. The directive has had two readings in the European Parliament and is now in the conciliation phase of the co-decision procedure. If agreement is reached the new Directive is likely to become European law by the beginning of 2006.
The directive describes new microbiological standards and classifications for bathing waters to protect public health. It also requires active management including public participation, provision of information to the public and the preparation of bathing water profiles to identify all potential sources of pollution. There are is also an important link with the WFD particularly in respect of the impact of diffuse pollution.
This conference brings together stakeholders interested in the implementation of this directive including beach managers, environmental NGOs, local and national government, regulators, water companies, farming interests and tourism.
